Trapped In The Closet Chapter 32 Featuring Terri McMillan and Jonathan Plummer Is Finally Complete
It took months of legal battling and embarrassing national publicity, but writer Terry McMillan has finally ended her celebrated marriage to a Jamaican man 24 years her junior -- whom she belatedly realized was gay. "Our divorce was officially finalized on Oct. 4,'' the Danville resident wrote us this week. The best-selling author of "How Stella Got Her Groove Back'' said her ex-husband, Jonathan Plummer, is now "free to live anyway he sees fit ... ''
More than anything, McMillan told us, she was "deeply offended for being portrayed (by her husband) as a homophobe ... particularly when my insulting comments were directed solely at and privately to my husband." She apparently was referring to the time she left him a bottle of Jamaican hot pepper sauce on which she wrote, "Fag Juice Burn Baby Burn." And probably also to the time she scrawled "Jonathan's Fag boyfriend Fag" on a photo of a friend. "I do not hate my husband for being gay,'' she wrote to us. "I do not hate anybody (except Saddam Hussein).'' Well, perhaps. In one last gesture, McMillan sent Plummer's attorney an inscribed copy of "How Stella Got Her Groove Back'' with this parting shot: "You made me sick these last eight or nine months and I hope you rot in hell.'' Mr. Biggs Goes On Trial For Tax Evasion (Lord knows being a cake daddy ain't easy)
Ronald Isley, lead singer of legendary R&B band the Isley Brothers, went on trial on Wednesday on tax evasion charges that could result in a prison sentence of up to 26 years if convicted. Isley, 64, who emerged from bankruptcy in the early 1990s, is accused of demanding fees in cash for his tour dates, making it difficult to determine how much of his upfront tour fees were used for expenses and how much was profit. He is also accused of using for his own benefit royalty checks issued to other Isley Brothers-related enterprises and people, including his brother O'Kelly, who died in 1986. Prosecutors say he used the funds to buy a yacht and two mansions in Missouri. Isley has pleaded not guilty to five counts of tax evasion and one count of failing to file a tax return. No figure has been given for the amount of alleged tax evasion.
The main prosecution witness is Isley's former tour manager, Ruby Martin, who worked with the singer for eight years and who is testifying under immunity from charges that she did not file her own income taxes on time for four years. The Isley Brothers enjoyed their biggest success in the 1960s and 1970s with hits like "This Old Heart of Mine" and "Who's That Lady." Members came and went but in 1990 Ronald and younger brothers Ernie and Marvin reunited and produced several new albums.
